Hi Jordan,
Here at JHU we support a Mobile Computing Program which supports in-warranty HP, Dell and Apple laptops.

Imaging, OS Installation - We have made flash drive installation for El Capitan for reimaging. We also try to through Apple's website to install the current OS.

Bootcamp - Since this is a very lengthy process and there are only two Apple Certification technicians then we provide student with instructions and have them do this on their own.

Data Backups - We were providing data backups in the event of a hard drive issue, but we decided to have student's become responsible for their data backups. If we had more than two Apple Certified technicians then we could possibly do this, but again you start running out of space when keeping their data on your desktop or your external hard drive. Our policy was 7 days to bring an external hard drive to copy over your data or it was being deleted. They would always forget and it was just becoming too much of a hassle.

Malware Removal - The best solution is usually reloading the OS.

Hope this information Helps.

Thanks,

Kimberly Kelly

Subject: OS installation on student devices

Hello everyone,

Our service desk team mans several walkup locations around main campus – we are currently looking to define our support services at these locations a bit more clearly. We currently make a good faith effort on anything that comes our way, but considering the BYOD environment we of course make no promises. I would like to find out how others have handled support of the following on student devices and what considerations went in to those decisions:

Imaging, OS installation
Bootcamp
Data backups
Malware removal

Thanks! Please let me know if these has already been discussed elsewhere.
