A couple years back when we were upgrading our network infrastructure in
the Residence Halls we took a look at port usage. At that point we were
doing "port per pillow" and we found that our port utilization was at
around 5%. Everyone was using the wireless for everything but gaming
devices (to be fair, our wireless also allows for many gaming devices, so
your port utilization may be higher, but I would bet not over 50%). Based
on that we reduced available ports in the halls to 25% of what we had
before. Now all wired ports are not active by default. We have a form that
can be filled out to request a port activation. They can have up to "port
per pillow" but they have to request it. We've never even come close to
running out of ports available.
