Coaxial Cable TV vs. IPTV
I realize all campuses operate and function differently, so I'm posting thi=
s in the form of a few questions which may lead to an online survey in the =
near future.
Does your campus maintain its own CATV distribution network or is it provid=
ed by a vendor such as AT&T, Time Warner, COMCAST, Xfinity, Dish, Campus Te=
levideo?
Yes, Comcast/Xfinity provides and maintains the headend equipment and we ma=
intain and support the coax distribution.
Has your campus changed from coaxial cable TV to IPTV within the last two y=
ears?
In November, we began offering Xfinity on Campus in addition to the coaxial=
cable TV. At some point down the road, we may decide to discontinue the c=
oaxial service. This might be necessary as more TVs drop support for Clear=
QAM.
What were some of the major obstacles after the change?
Not many problems. Comcast is currently working on inserting our locally in=
serted channels into the XoC lineup.
Comcast currently does not offer a STB, but they say that are working on it=
. Also, the service currently doesn't work on any media players. Even if it=
did, some players don't work on our network.
How much notice did you give the housing residents and the campus (academic=
, athletic, other) departments prior to the change?
None, since we didn't discontinue the coax service.
Did you receive negative feedback prior to or right after the change and wh=
o on campus (residents, academic, athletic, other) complained the most?
No
What additional hardware had to be installed in the residence halls to prov=
ide this service?
None
What additional hardware did the student (resident) need to connect to his/=
her TV to receive IPTV and was this hardware provided by a department affil=
iated with the campus if not provided by your department?
None, they use their laptops or phones to access the service.
Do you use a campus provided username/password or other authentication in o=
rder to limit service us to only faculty, staff and students?
Yes, via Shibboleth.
Did anyone see a spike in Bandwidth usage once the campus moved to IPTV, if=
so, how much additional Bandwidth is being purchased?
Comcast installed a direct line to our data center that handles all traffic=
between Comcast and the University so this doesn't use any of our Internet=
bandwidth.
