We use a combination of S2 for the exterior and interior doors of any
new buildings and for one dorm we use S2 for the exterior door access
and a product from Stanley called Best B.A.S.I.S. (also referred to as
Lenel at one point) for the interior doors as an offline system. For S2
the access is done by an prox antenna in the ID cards and it works
great, we also use that prox antenna for printer/copier management. For
the Best system it uses track 3 I believe on the mag stripe. Using an
offline system is a monumental pain in the butt, if you can, at all
costs avoid it. I would recommend using the S2 system for an online
system. We have one master panel and the "server software" all runs
there from an embedded Linux chip inside. The company was of little help
getting the XML API to work but we eventually figured it out, that
allows us to add new users automatically from a Banner feed and upload
freshman photos (which works for about 95% of the incoming
freshman....hey....it's better than manually taking their mug shots :-)
From the version we have it doesn't seem to integrate with Active
Directory but I haven't looked at it since we implemented it a few years
ago.
