Before you make any major changes, take a hard look at the Netequalizer - I=
was in the same boat you are, and if I had put the Neteq in prior to our b=
andwidth upgrade, I think we could have gone another 1-2 years before we ac=
tually needed more bandwidth. The ROI is terrific - Our Bluecoat upgrade =
was going to be a ridiculous price, and we are much happier now. Bandwidth=
arbitration based on behavior is much more effective in a campus environme=
nt than trying to control what the students are doing. The Neteq manages or=
eliminates so much of the superfluous traffic, that the real traffic flows=
smoothly. Last night (a typical night) "average" internet bandwidth (acco=
rding to the provider monitoring) was 120 Mbps, with a peak of 242 mbps - =
1800 students in residence - ~4500 endpoints total on a 300 Mbps Metro-E li=
nk. And our complaints about network have dropped to almost nothing, and w=
e haven't received a RIAA/DCMA notice in over a year.....Hmmm....
Feel free to contact me with questions. I hope this helps...

Subject: New Stratagies to Meet Higher Bandwidther Requirements in the HD V=
ideo World
I am curious if there have been any new approaches being used to better man=
age the bandwidth requirements of our students today?
Saint Mary's University has approx. 6000 FTE's, with 1,200 in residence. W=
e have a BlueCoat Packetshaper 10000 which has served us very well. We are=
facing higher bandwidth demands as our students have on average 4-6 device=
s demanding bandwidth for streaming HD video and voice. I am sure we are no=
t alone in this situation.
Our campus has a 200M commercial internet connection which is where most in=
ternet traffic passes, (except Facebook, Netflix, Google, and a couple othe=
rs), and this 200M link is managed by our PacketShaper. In our PacketShap=
er we assign 150M (of the 200) to student traffic, and allow it to burst to=
175M, needless to say it is always running at 175M. We are using the PS D=
ynamic Sub partitioning to divide the bandwidth evenly between active users=
, and we do not classify based on traffic type (eg. Bittorrent, Netflix, et=
c).
How are you dealing with the increased demand? Are you restricting more wha=
t users are doing? (Something that would not fly well here). Increasing ava=
ilable bandwidth?
Thanks,
