We have several dual boot environments and all of them are a little
different. I like to use rEFIt in my labs so the users have a choice when
the computers boots for the OS. Some of the labs default to Windows and
others default to MacOS. I never saw a need for using different keyboards
in the labs, all of our dual boot labs are equipped with the Apple
keyboards that came with the computers. The Command key acts as the Windows
key.
We image all of our computers with DeployStudio and it handles partitioning
the systems for dual boot and deploys the image to both sides. In most
cases the Windows side has been sysprepped and DeployStudio even takes care
of naming the Windows side.
Keeping the systems up to date becomes another challenge. We use KACE to
deploy software updates and deployments and I have several scripts setup
that make sure the computers are booted in Windows at 3:00am for patching
and then in MacOS at 5:00am for patching. The major issue that I have run
into on this front is that when the computers are shutdown on the Windows
side the power schedule isn't applied and the machines don't power on like
I want them to. Also, Apple's implementation of wake-on-lan only wakes a
machine if it is sleeping and not powered down. The end result is that
machines which are powered off completely don't patch and only machines
that are sleeping at the start of the cycle wake up for patching.
We use these for securing the Minis: http://locdown.com/mac-trap.htm
