Popak. I pulled some data like this a few months ago in an educause email =
list. What it came down to as I saw it was the following.
It seems the sweet spot for user:megbit ratio is about 4:1. I also receive=
d several reports of folks having very good performance with ratios as high=
as 12:1. A couple even higher. We are at 6:1 and 9:1 on my 2 campuses. =
But all of these sites also relied on a bandwidth management device of some=
type as well. I was doing this in the midst of shopping for a new bandwid=
th manager as well. We moved from using a Bluecoat Packetshaper to an AP =
Connections NetEqualizer. I have been unconvinced that deep packet inspect=
ion will be able to cope with bandwidth and the encryption issues with mana=
ging and identifying (and prioritizing) bandwidth by flows. I was introduc=
ed to the equalization concept, and while it sounded great, I was unconvinc=
ed at first. But a colleague at another college convinced me to take a tes=
t drive. We implemented the units which are incredibly easy to manage, and=
they've done a great job of locking down P2P traffic and equalizing bandwi=
dth so that huge downloads don't punish light traffic browsers. The large =
processes still get time, just not the lion's share as they would if things=
were unmanaged.
I know, I sound like a commercial. In parting, I say, get an eval. Give=
it a test drive.
Number of residents: about 900 per campus.
We don't really split out residential from academic. 100 Mbps and 150Mbps
We use about as much as we have. But it's not quite like it was before we =
upgraded bw. At one point we were 95% from 6am to 11pm. My 100Mbps campus=
is between 65 and 75 consistent but does peak higher. My other campus is =
usually at 120Mbps or so. I have the neteq to kick in when we hit 90% util=
ization. We do hit that pretty regularly.
We use a nac on one campus, but just for access control. No bandwidth. Bu=
t we do have NetEqualizers at each campus.

Subject: Survey of Wireless Bandwidth for 2012
Hi All,
Would you guys be kind enough and fill out this survey for me? I am trying =
to compare our usage with other campuses and find out what kind of manageme=
nt system is being used. We have a 1 Gbps pipe to our halls for 3500 studen=
ts and it seems it is getting filled up sooner or later.
Number of residents:
Total BandWidth for residential halls:
Maximum usage during peak hours:
Do you use any NAC or Traffic Management device:
Thank you very much,
Popak Roshan
