First, I guess I should ask if there is an FAQ for this list and how
to get it. I'd guess that the following question may be on it.
I'd like to know how other institutions are handling network card
installations. We started a resnet pilot program last year with only
25 students and we installed the cards, driver software, and some
communications software (telnet, etc). The installations were done
in the students' rooms. Between student schedules, wiring problems,
and student unfamiliarity with networks it became a very time
consuming, painful process.
This year, we've expanded the program. The students are required
to supply their own cards. Our bookstore sells cards and installs
and configures them for free. They'll install other cards for $35.
Many students brought cards. Some bought cards from the bookstore
and didn't want to leave their computers for the free install
or wanted the experience of installing their own cards. Again,
the process has been less than desirable and confusing.
I'm beginning to think the only workable solution is for us to
install all cards and make sure everything is working before giving
the machine back to the students. I think the only labor efficient
means of doing this is in batch. Either have a drop off point or
have an "installer" present in the residence halls a couple hours
a day in a central location where a student can bring a computer.
I'd like to say that we only support certain cards. We're charging
$90 a year for the network connection. Perhaps we should increase
the yearly rate to include a card cost (either buy or lease) so
we can control the type (and reliability, compatibility, and
supportability) of the card.
Any thoughts or experiences would be appreciated.
