This is in regard to a laserwriter spooler system that my
university is currently seeking for use in our various computer labs on
campus. We currently run our Macintosh equipment on an Apple Network, and
are using AppleShare 3.0 for our FileServer and PrintServer networks.
Our printserver machine is a Macintosh Centris 630, and the laserwriters
that this system would be connected to are LaserWriter Pro 630's. The
system should be able to support up to 80 Macintoshes in one zone.
We are having a problem with clients printing to only one of the available
Laserwriters in a computer lab. This creates problems, as clients will try
to delete their jobs from the print server, or even send them to multiple
laserwriters, thus creating a waste of paper, and a backup of jobs waiting
to print. I am currently seeking information on the implementation of a
spooling package containing the following features :

                1. A spooling system that would automatically direct a job
submitted by a client to the
laserwriter that was the least busy at the time of
submittal.

                2. A system that would tell the client, before he/she
prints, how many pages are currently
waiting to print on a particular printer.

                3. Would have the ability to move a job from one
laserwriter to another without having
to delete and resubmit the job.

                4. Could send a message to the user either when their job
is getting ready to print, or has just
been completed. This would enable the client to
continue to work at their machine until
                     their job has finished printing.

These are the features that we hope to implement. I would greatly
appreciate information on any or all of the above ideas. I have inclued my
e-mail address below---Thanks in advance.....
