Those who know me well understand that I don't often gush, and that when
criticism is due, I'm not shy about offering it. However, the ResNet '94
conference has thus far been nothing but occassion to gush.

I'm not going to kid you -- content alone isn't what makes this so special.
Those of us who were languishing in hot weather with high humidity before
we got on the planes are just beside ourselves over the weather here. But
the content is great. I *consistantly* have that feeling that you get
during the one or two really relevant sessions you'll stumble onto during
an EDUCOM or a SIGUCCS -- it's really amazing to be taking part in a
conference where virtually every word spoken is all focused on addressing
the same issues.

In the opening session Sunday, Stanford's Vice Provost for Student Affairs
Mary Edmonds welcomed us and explained briefly the insitutional support for
Stanford's ResComp program. Dan Updegrove from Penn was the first case
study, giving an overview of the process his institution went through in
bringing their first residence halls onto the campus network. Dan's frank
discussion of their problems along the way as well as their ultimate
successes was as illuminating as it was well presented.

I'm not going to attempt to summarize the other sessions I saw, as much
because I'm afraid I couldn't do the content justice in a short paragraph
as the fact that I simply couldn't attend every session and I wouldn't want
to bias this reporting (any more than I already do :-) with my session
preferences.

After a full day of five sessions, we finished with a hearty reception
hosted by 3Com. The array of hors d'oeuvres was astounding, from
vegetarian sushi to a humorous attempt at tandoori beef (thin slices of
beef on a skewer with chunky peanut butter on them) to endive leaves
stuffed with Waldorf salad -- quite a spread. All held on the deck of a
building on the "shore" of Stanford's Lake Lagunita, which perhaps might be
renamed Lake Secca given the absence of the usual lake-defining water...

As we reach the half-way point of ResNet '94, everyone is looking forward
to the next day and a half of sessions. Of course, we continue to offer
our sincerest thanks and congratulations to the Stanford ResComp staff who
have worked hard to make this wonderful conference a reality.

Reporting from room 344 Roble Hall,
Mike!
