Saturday evening marked the kickoff of the ResNet '94 conference on the
beautiful Stanford campus in Palo Alto, California.

Cisco Systems hosted a Country BBQ for ResNet participants in front of
Roble Hall, the Stanford residence hall that most of the conference
participants are staying in. The barbeque featured shrimp, steak,
hamburgers, and brats all prepared over a wood fire, as well as plenty of
salads, fruit, and desserts. Good show, Cisco!

Roble is one of the residence halls on Stanford's campus network, so many
conference participants have their portable computers on the campus network
and thus, the Internet. Roble also has two computer rooms with about 12 or
so networked systems, so even if your school's participant didn't bring a
portable computer, they have no excuse for not writing home occassionally.

Of course, if they did send an excuse, it would probably come in the form
of a picture postcard from Stanford... This campus is incredibly
beautiful, with it's romantic Mission style buildings interspersed with
some of the most innovative modern campus architecture of the last thirty
years. The weather is gorgeous, with days getting into the mid eighties
and the nights falling to the high fifties/low sixties. Not a cloud in the
sunny skies, though there is a morning haze that takes some time to burn
off each morning.

It should be mentioned that the coordination team here at Stanford for
ResNet has done a fabulous job with every detail so far. Jeff Merriman,
Sandi Senti, Leigh Burnside, Dane Spearing, and others whose names I've
surely missed have all done a wonderful job with getting the conference up
and running. A big THANKS to them for all their great work.

For those of you who couldn't make it, it looks like you'll be missing an
incredible conference. There's a lot of energy here among the
participants, and I know we're all looking forward to the next three days.

Reporting from room 344 Roble Hall,
Mike!
