I have some questions regarding our Residence network. I hope somebody
can help us with them.

At the University of Twente (Netherlands) we are in the stage where we
are planning on providing the accounts for the students. In the next
months we have to generate 7000 accounts and every year another 500 to
1000. Is there an easy way to do this? There will be an Oracle
database available with all students but there won't be an indication
whether it is a new one or something has changed. Students that are
gone aren't even in the system anymore. So what about them? How do we
generate passwords? We are planning on using the registrationnumber of
the student as their accountname. So there also has to be an
aliasesfile for maildelivery. Our addresses are all in the form:
<initials sep. by dots><lastname>@student.utwente.nl
That is the standard for all students and personel at our university.
Besides that we have in some cases to make a distinction between
studenst who live on campus and who live off campus. Students on
campus are in a database at the housing department. About 50% of them
move in or out every year.

Another problem we have is the provision of networkcable. We want the
students on campus to use the right 10BaseT-cable. Because there are
several departments who are using RJ45-outlets for all kinds of
connections we have decided to go with a special cable. We use Bertek
cable, blue, level 5. So every blue cable with RJ45's on it is a cable
for the university network. We have good experiences with that. One
department moved lately and they rounded up ALL cable's. After the
moving they collected all blue cable and returned them to us. (They
came in a new building where they use there own network).
Now we are thinking about ways to make sure the students use our cable
and they return them when they move off campus or decide they don't
wnat to be connected any longer. Should we ask a bond for the cable
which they get refunded when they return the cable or should they just
buy them. How much should that be? The price of the cable or just a
small percentage? Should we consider providing several lengths of
cable or just one length? With several length we should register them
I think. If we give them a long cable and they cut it in pieces, they
can get money back for every piece (if the put connectors on them).

Has anybody any ideas?

Thanks

Peter Peters
