At Dartmouth, we've designed NameD*tective, a client/server system to address
just this issue. Like other schools, we use MacIP addressing to assign
(changing) IP addresses to students. Anyone who wants to advertise a resource
on the Internet simply uses NameD*tective (and the corresponding Control
Panel called NameD*Responder). I've appended the READ ME file below...

These programs are alpha test versions, but they've been in use for a couple
months now. We're looking for feedback on the program.

You can get copies of NameD*tective via anonymous FTP from our CD-Changer. It
is a Mac using MacIP addressing and NameD*tective (of course). The DNS name
is

cd-changer.kiewit.atzone.dartmouth.edu

Look in the NameD-tective directory, or use the URL below:

ftp://cd-changer.kiewit.atzone.dartmouth.edu//NameD-tective

About NameD*tective and NameD*Responder
15 Feb 94

NameD*tective and NameD*Responder work together to give your Mac a fixed
Domain Name System name, without entering the name (and its IP address) into
a host table. This is most useful if you use MacTCP with "Server" address
assignment: even though your IP address changes from day-to-day, your DNS
Name will remain constant.

The NameD*Responder control panel has extensive help which gives more
information including installation instructions, protocol details, and
shareware information.

This folder contains:

About NameD*tective - this document
NameD*tective 1.0a4 - the DNS sub-domain server
NameD*Responder 1.0a4 - a control panel that registers the DNS name
         of your choosing
NameD*tective 1.0a4.sit - the above three files, in a StuffIt archive
