Jonathan and rest of Resnet folks,

I would like to introduce myself and let you all know what we are doing
at UC Berkeley. Like Oregon State, we at CAL are just starting to wire
and setup data networks in the Residence Halls. I work for the
Department of Housing and Dining. Working closly with the central campus
Data Communication and Network Services Group, we have successfully setup
196 in-room connections, to serve as a test group. Of the 196 possible
connections, 60 students are currently using the service.

During this test period, the service is free, and Housing is loaning
Ethernet cards and connection equipment. Students have the choice of
signing up for either an Ethernet of LocalTalk connection. Upon filling
out a request form, an installation appointment is arranged. At the
installation time, someone from my staff installs the appropriate
hardware and software on the students machine, and gives them a general
overview of the Campus Network/Internet services. The students are also
encouraged to attend an Internet workshop given in one of our
Residential Computing Labs.

Currently these in-room connections are simply extentions of the Campus
Network, using category 5 UTP wiring, David Systems hubs, Star
Controllers, Fast Paths, and an ISDN bridge to connect the off campus
building to the Central Network over ISDN. We are eventually planning on
setting up true LANs with file servers and laser printers.

We are also planning on wiring an additional 2000 in-room connections in
the next 6 months. With these new installations we are looking at
intelligent, packet scrambling hubs for additional security. Also by
next fall we will have worked out the equipment lease issues and will
charge students $50.00 per academic year for an ethernet connection and
$35.00 for a LocalTalk connection. This will include the lease of all
necessary connection equipment and the necessary software.

As for the software; We are installing MacTCP, NCSA Telnet, Eudora,
Fetch, and TurboGopher on the Macintosh machines, and Novell LAN
Workplace, and WSGopher for the PCs. We are looking at Mosaic clients,
but are worried about bandwidth problems as long as we are using ISDN.

That's what we are doing so far at CAL. I want to thank everyone who
posted to this group for all your advice, especially Dane Spearing
from Stanford.
