Well, the votes are in on the preferred season for ResNet '94 and
summer wins. I received 5 votes for the spring (end of May) dates and
10 votes for an early summer date. A few people indicated either
would be fine.
I apologize to those who really, really wanted to meet earlier, but,
frankly, those of us at Stanford are pleased because it means more
time to plan, especially since we are currently caught up in yet
another round of budget reductions.
Here's the plan, so far. We would like to host a three day symposium
sometime between Thursday, July 7th and Tuesday July 12. For making
travel arrangements either Thurs, Fri, Sat or Sun, Mon, Tues seems to
make sense. We welcome further input on this.
One of our largest residence halls, Roble Hall, is available during
that time. It can house about 180 to 200 people. Roble is one of
the prettiest and oldest buildings on campus, but those of you who
are concerned about California geology will be relieved to hear that
the building was seismically restructured in 1988. This
restructuring project offered us the opportunity to upgrade the
building for data and video service, so Roble is now Ethernet and
PhoneNet ready. We hope to make some programmatic use of this
connectivity during the symposium. It is a student residence so, of
course, bathrooms and showers are shared, with both men's and women's
facilities located on each of it's twelve corridors. However, there
are washbasins located in each room. Roble has a number of
comfortable common areas, such as lounges, computer clusters, and a
library where evening discussions or small meetings might be held.
The nightly rate for Roble is $39.00 including housekeeping service.
You will also be able to stay in Roble an extra night if you need to
or want to. For those of you who would prefer more luxurious
accommodations there is a Holiday Inn about 3/4 mile from the center
of campus and the even more fancy Stanford Park hotel about 2 miles
or so away. If you stay off campus you may want to rent a car,
although Matt Arthur of Wash U. claims to enjoy the walk from the
Holiday Inn -- lots of pretty palm trees.
We're trying to keep registration fees low, between $150 and $200
assuming that 50 or more people attend. As I posted earlier, this
will be a "no-frills" event. We figure one reception would be nice,
and a continental breakfast each morning to get each day off to an
efficient start, and a box lunch. The Stanford student union will be
available for meals and there are a number of great restaurants in
nearby Palo Alto. The rest of the reg fee will go towards materials,
mailings, space rental, and about 200 to 250 hours of temporary or
student staff to help plan and staff the symposium.
Since we expect conference attendees to share the same broad range of
interests we feel it would be helpful to minimize the number of
concurrent events. We are therefore proposing a small number of
events including 1 or 2 keynote talks, 4 or 5 case study
presentations, and 8 to 10 focus sessions where different topics are
discussed. Some form of vendor participation will also be planned.
We will call for case study proposals over the network (please don't
send any yet). The 8 to 10 focus topics can be discussed on the net.
Here's a list that Sandy Senti came up with, and I have modified to
include Naomi Schmidt's list from EDUCOM:
Physical plant considerations -- wires
Activation equipment -- hardware
Services -- printing, software distribution, etc
Support -- central, distributed, students
Funding models
Residential programming -- computers and the community
Video services and commercial cable TV
Security and privacy
Network management, monitoring
Please post comments and suggestions to the ResNet-Forum mail list or
reply to me directly at BIRDLAND@JESSICA.STANFORD.EDU. This document
will soon be re-formatted and put into WWW and Gopher space where it
can evolve into the ResNet '94 registration and information pack.
