A brain-damaged move by Google that will hurt users (I know, what's new?)
This is deeply stupid by Google. The fact that users choose not to
interact with any given site's notifications does NOT mean they don't
find the notifications useful. Google has pulled this kind of stunt
before, as an excuse to kill off email notifications for YT channel
activity (except their own, of course!). At that time they claimed that
since most users didn't interact with most of those email notifications,
they were useless. This was utterly wrong and deeply stupid as well,
because the notifications subjects were extremely useful irrespective of
whether or not you chose to interact with any given one at any given
time. This whole deep pit of ignorance by Google is similar to emailing
lists where they drop you if you don't open their emails, not realizing
that simply seeing the subject lines is useful to many users even if
they don't choose to open the email (or are configured in a way that
when they DO open the emails a signal is NOT sent back to the sender,
for privacy reasons).
Google is sliding down that razor blade faster and faster. I know, not
exactly headline news.
