Greetings. While the PRIVACY Forum continues to be active dealing
with a wide range of privacy-related issues in various venues,
it has been quite a spell since the last PRIVACY Forum Digest.
This message is being sent outside of the normal sequence of digests,
with a primary purpose of discovering invalid addresses and bringing
the list up to date. In addition, some actual, genuine
privacy-related content ("Internet and Empires" video availability
info) is also included (see below) -- so this message hopefully
won't be a total loss from the standpoint of recipients.
The primary reason for the lack of new PRIVACY Forum Digests has
been the dearth of usable submissions to foster discussions. It has
never been my intention for the digest to be primarily a clipping
service, nor for it to run anonymous messages (except in cases where
the sender has a valid -- in my estimation -- reason for needing to
have their identity withheld, and simply being scared of spam is not
on my validity list). I view the digest somewhat like a professional
journal, and as in such journals authors should be willing to stand
behind what they say. There are of course other forums where nobody
much cares about who says what -- or whether or not any given
statement is actually true. That's not the PRIVACY Forum Digest.
So, if you'd like to see a return of interesting content to the
digest on a regular basis, much depends on *your* willingness to
participate. As always, please send submissions for consideration
to privacy@vortex.com.
OK, I promised some privacy-related content. Below is an updated
version of a message that recently went out on the PFIR (People For
Internet Responsibility) mailing list, announcing the online
availability of video from a talk I gave at Google's Los Angeles
center a few weeks ago. Privacy issues (including discussion of
recent Justice Department demands for search engine data,
censorship, and much more) were major facets of this talk (titled
"Internet and Empires"). Regular PRIVACY Forum readers may be happy
to hear that there's even a major science-fiction film reference
that features in the rhetoric.
If you have an hour or so to kill, you might wish to check out the
video. In any event, I hope to hear from you with new rounds of
PRIVACY Forum submissions. Take care all. Be seeing you.

Greetings. A little over two weeks ago, I was invited to Google's
Los Angeles (Santa Monica) facilities to give an informal talk
(titled "Internet and Empires") on a range of Internet-related
topics. Video of that presentation is now available, and since it
touches on a number of our favorite PFIR issues, I thought that
it might be of some interest.
The topics naturally included a number of the controversial issues
related to Google, but also more generally privacy, free speech,
ISPs, data retention, government and legal issues, censorship,
network neutrality, and more.
The talk ran about an hour and the video will reportedly become
available soon as one of Google's "Tech Talks"
Since the video is not currently online there (and for people who
need or prefer other video formats), I have Windows Media
versions available now (my thanks to Google for providing me with
a video master for processing).
Please note that all of the opinions expressed in this talk of
course are mine, and should naturally not be construed to represent
the views of Google, Inc.
