I didn't know his sentence was so light. Randal Schwartz, of Perl fame,
was convicted on 3 felony charges related to some "cracking" he did while
emplyed as a contractor for intel. As far as anyone can tell, there was no
real damage done, and if there was any, it was strictly limited to within
the intel organization. His sentence includes 5 years probation, 480 hours
community service, a 90-day suspended sentence, and $68,000 of restitution
payable to intel. Not to mention his damaged reputation, loss of
significant business, and legal fees (now near $200k).
