Hey all,
The Senate meeting starts in a little over an hour. If you want to get up
to speed so we can have a more informed discussion, keep reading. Remember,
you [hopefully] won't have your laptop open during the discussion, so you
should read ahead now. I'll also try to print out something with questions
and topics for discussion in case the committee doesn't provide a lot of
direction.
The committee's charge:
http://web.mit.edu/provost/studygroup/
The committee is supposed to consider MIT's future role in online education,
if such exists. We started off with no assumptions. The "do nothing" idea
was on equal footing with all the "do something" ideas. Since then we have
generated a lot of ideas, and we have made a lot of judgments about those
ideas, but all of this is very preliminary. We are coming to Senate to get
your take on what has been discussed so far and what we should move forward
with (if anything). We will submit a report to the Provost on May 31st.
*I want to especially urge you to come to the realization that "online
education" is not the same thing as the University of Phoenix*. It is not
even bachelor's degrees, or courses for credit. It is any kind of education
taking place over the internet. MIT's OCW <http://ocw.mit.edu/index.htm> is
online education. Khan Academy <http://www.khanacademy.org/> is online
education. CMU's OLI <http://oli.web.cmu.edu/openlearning/> is online
education. And University of Phoenix is also doing online education, but
its target audience, academic quality, and mode of certification are
probably much different from MIT would want to do.
OCW is great, but a lot has changed in the decade since it was established.
How can we use the internet to more fully execute MIT's mission in the next
decade? It's a very interesting question, and we want your help in trying
to answer it.
