What questions are we planning on asking in the referendum?
I think that the questions themselves are far more critical than the introd=
uction.

Subject: Re: Dining Referendum Bill
Foremost, thank you for writing this. I really like the idea of adding a r=
eferendum to this year's election. I would make a few strategical changes =
to the way this bill is set up however. The referendum should be posed neu=
trally, or at least factually, and in such a manner that addresses the issu=
e of dining rather than pointing fingers.
While everything outlined in the bill is true, the administration will prob=
ably be ticked if we present it to them in this fashion. Note that this bi=
ll calls out "the Chancellor", but the Chancellor who will see the results =
of the referendum is different that the person implied in the bill.
I would re-frame the whereas section of this bill to say things to the effe=
ct of:
-Dining is an issue important to undergraduates
-There is a need for hard, unbiased data on student opinion with regard to =
dining
-It is the duty of the UA to reflect student opinion
I also feel it is important that Senate approve specifically what the refer=
endum says. Given that a binding referendum requires a 3/5 vote, it is imp=
ortant enough to where we shouldn't pass something ambiguous.
Unless someone can generate the proper wording for the referendum, I recomm=
end that the "that" section be re-framed:
-a subcommittee be created to draft a referendum about dining that presents=
a factual depiction of the proposed plan
-that this referendum be submitted for approval at the next regularly sched=
uled meeting.
Again, I fully wish to see a referendum occur. Given that we only have one=
shot, I would like to see it done as effectively as possible.
Thanks,
Al
