I think that this is exactly where we can add value to the report.
The UA has this tendency to only come forth with the lowest common denomina=
tor views. From the meeting today about the only thing we could agree on i=
s that any plan should not be mandatory. And of course, all things being e=
qual, we don't want it to be mandatory.
I think we, as the UA, could provide more value if we took stronger positio=
ns. If only 7% want sustainability, we should say that and advocate for a =
lower-cost, less-sustainable plan. If we say how we think things should be=
funded (centrally, by users, etc) that provides input.
Saying no is easy. The administration knows we don't want a mandatory plan=
if we can help it. But where do the students stand on the more complex is=
sues????? This is where we can provide valuable input.

There is a vocal minority of students who really think sustainable food sho=
uld be a big part of the planning and creation of a new dining system. We =
gave one of them a chance to write up something that we might include in th=
e report, and he did. We thought it was a nice idea, but probably a little=
unrealistic and possibly financially infeasible. So we cut it up, added i=
n the phrase "equal or lesser costs", and kept it there as a way of saying,=
"here's another preference, if it doesn't interfere with your main priorit=
ies."
So yes, there was some strong student backing for the idea, but on the orde=
r of ~7% of surveyed students. Most of the rest seemed to think that sort =
of thing was not nearly as important as keeping costs down.
