Subject: MIT student running for Cambridge City Council - volunteers needed=

Hi all,
My name is Paul Romano and I'm a PhD student in nuclear engineering. I'm
helping a fellow MIT student at Sloan, Leland Cheung, in his bid to get
elected to the city council. I was hoping that you would be able to send ou=
t
the message below to the Simmons Hall list. We're looking for volunteers to
help with the campaign and also to get students registered to vote ahead of
the upcoming City elections on November 3rd. I think most students agree
that having student representation in city government would be a very good
thing for MIT, so anything you can do to help get Leland's name out would
greatly help in achieving that.
We're also looking for someone to serve as a "dorm captain" in each
residence to help coordinate voter registration and information
dissemination. Let me know if you have questions or concerns.
Best regards,
Paul Romano
Committee to Elect Leland Cheung
--------------------------------
Residents of Simmons Hall,
This November 3rd, all the seats on the Cambridge City Council and School
Committees will be up for election. This election in particular will be of
special importance to MIT and Harvard since one of our own, Leland Cheung,
will be running for City Council. Leland is an MBA student at Sloan as well
as an MPA student at the Kennedy School at Harvard. His platform focuses on
building positive interactions between the universities and the larger
Cambridge community (residents, government, businesses, etc.). I encourage
you to read about his ideas, plans, and positions on his website at
http://ElectLeland.org.
Why is it important to elect one of our peers to City Council? It means an
elected official who understands the needs of the academic community and
will fight for MIT in the city. Here are a few issues the city controls
which could improve the lives of students:
- Safe streets near campus,
- Better parking availability on and near campus,
- Enhanced WiFi coverage in parks and recreational spaces,
- Enhanced cell phone coverage in buildings,
- More late night food options, and
- Implementing bike-sharing in Cambridge at the same time Boston introduce=
s
its own bike-share program.
More than that, though, Leland's campaign is seeking to make sure students
always have a political voice in Cambridge. Once elected, Leland will creat=
e
a campaign fund to ensure that students always have a candidate or councilo=
r
to be their voice in their adopted city.
Leland is seeking support from students in his bid to get elected to the
City Council. We're looking for volunteers to help with voter registration,
canvassing precincts in Cambridge, man phone banks, and various other tasks=
.
On September 20th , we will be going through undergraduate and graduate
residences to encourage students to register to vote and to distribute
information on Leland's campaign. This will be conducted as two three-hour
shifts (10am-1pm and 2pm-5pm). There are a great number of reasons to
consider volunteer for Leland's campaign, such as:
- Learning about political campaigns, local elections, and city politics;
- Experience working for a real political campaign;
- Meeting other enthusiastic students interested in policy and politics;
- Interacting with Cambridge residents;
- Developing an appreciation for the diversity of our city; and, of course=
,
- Free food at events for volunteers!
Volunteering for the campaign can be as little or as much of a time
commitment as you would like. We understand that MIT students are
notoriously busy, but contributing a few hours to promote having student
representation in local government can be a very rewarding experience. You
don't need to have any background in policy or government, just a
willingness to help. Leland's campaign staff will train volunteers on how t=
o
properly canvass through the city, universities, and elsewhere.
We are also looking to have a point person in each residence, i.e. a =93dor=
m
captain=94, that will be able to assist with coordinating voter registratio=
n
and information dissemination efforts.
If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Paul Romano (
romano7@mit.edu) for further details about the upcoming residence canvassin=
g
this weekend and other volunteer opportunities.
Sincerely,
Committee to Elect Leland Cheung
