I have made ssh available in the crypto locker for Ultrix, Solaris,
AIX, IRIX, NetBSD, and Linux.
ssh is intended to work as a drop-in replacement for rsh providing
public-key encryption to protect the authenticity and privacy of
connections. See /mit/crypto/src/ssh-1.2.12/README for a list of
features and other information.
Legal information (see /mit/crypto/src/ssh-1.2.12/COPYING for
details):
* RSA: ssh uses the RSA algorithm for public key encryption.
I have built ssh using the rsaref2 library, which allows
non-commercial use. You are probably in violation of the
RSA patent if you use ssh for commercial purposes with a
license from RSA.
* Cylink: all public-key cryptography is alleged covered by
Clink's Hellman-Merkle patent. However, Cylink claims that
it does not intend to restrict non-commercial use; from
http://www.cylink.com/qa.html:
Q. Will Cylink attempt to stop the non-commercial use
of public key (such as in PGP)?
A. No. Although, technically, a Stanford patent
license is needed for the public domain software such
as PGP, Cylink intends to promote the use of public
key on the Internet. Cylink intends to announce a
royalty-free license for personal use after meeting
with a spokesperson for the PGP community. Watch
Cylink's home page for details. (http://www.cylink.com)
* IDEA: ssh can use the IDEA algorithm for symmetric
encryption. IDEA is allegedly patented by Ascom-Tech in the
US. According to Roland Weinhart, "Non commercial use of
IDEA is free." Again, you are probably in violation if you
use ssh for commercial purposes.
