I've installed Scribus 1.0.1 for Linux on Athena (source is available but
I couldn't get it to build properly on Solaris). Scribus is an Open Source
page layout application with some of the capabilities of Adobe PageMaker
and Quark XPress.

It is particularly noteworthy for its ability to output press-ready pdfs, and
for adhering strongly to recent pdf standards. To run it:

	add scribus
	scribus &

at the Athena prompt. I included the optional Python scripting module
and LittleCMS libraries in the installation, along with the
documentation, which is accessible through an internal viewer. There
are additional manuals in pdf format- I put links to some of these at
the top level of the version locker (/mit/scribus_v1.0.1).

There is a review of Scribus in the 11/03 issue of Linux Journal. Full
text is available online to MIT users- search in Google for
"Introducing Scribus", and go to the hit at portal.acm.org which will
take you to a full-text version of the article (the URL varies from
access to access and can't be entered directly).
