I've installed the Star Office 6 Office Suite on Athena for Sun and
Linux. You might want to compare it to Open Office 1.0 (add ooffice; ooffice).
We're still working on some glitches, including an issue where the help system
won't display on most Linux machines (a known font problem- we're reseaching
work-arounds).

From my message to users:

Star Office 6.0 has been installed on Athena and is now available for
Sun and Linux. To run it now:

add soffice; soffice -ver 6.0 &

We expect to make it the default version later this Summer, subject to
further testing.

The first time you run it, it will create a local configuration
directory below ~/staroffice6.0 in your home directory (actually, an
architecture-specific tree pointed to by a ~/staroffice6.0 symlink)
that contains about 1.4 meg of configuration files. This configuration
directory is distinct from that used for older Star Office releases
(and Open Office 1.0, which is very similar to Star Office 6.0 and is
also available on Athena).

The default location for saving documents is now the top level of your
home directory. You can change this but it is a good idea to not save
below ~/staroffice6.0 since if you do, your documents will only be
visible on the same machine architecture you created them on (Sun or Linux).
As Star Office 6 documents are platform-independent, a good choice a
of save location is something like ~/soffice6docs, below the top level of
your home directory.

If you open Star Office 5.x documents in 6.0, it will offer to convert them
to the 6.0 format for you (which is advisable if you don't plan on opening
them in Star Office 5.2 any more). Star Office 6.0 documents should be
fully compatible with Open Office 1.0 documents.

Please see file /mit/soffice_v6.0/README.athena for additional important
information, including how to configure local printers and a known
problem with the help system on Linux machines.
