I've updated Sun's FORTE Java Development Environment on Athena to release
3.0 (Community Edition) for Sun and Linux. From my notice to current
FORTE users:
FORTE for Java 3.0 is now available on Athena for Linux and Sun machines.
To run it:
add forte
runide -ver 3.0
It will put local configuration files in a subdirectory ffjuser30 of your
home directory. You will need at least 2 meg of free space for the initial
installation, and potentially more later as you add files to it. Please note
that if you opt for autoupdate at some later date all downloaded files will
be put in this directory and these could potentially require significantly
more space.
If you've been using the 3.0 prerelease version of FORTE for Java, you
should save any important project files you have in the ~/ffjuser30
directory, then completely delete this directory and all its contents-
the production 3.0 release uses the same directory and there are file
incompatibilites between it and the prerelease version. (If you 're
not sure if you've been using the 3.0 prerelease or not, look for a
directory ffjuser30 in your home directory before running the 3.0
production release; if this already exists, you've been running the
prerelease).
During the initial installation, please opt to decline installing
support for the IPlanet Web server and perform the step indicated that
will prevent the installer from asking about installing this
again. Athena client machines are not authorized to run Web servers
and this will not be useful in our environment.
There is documentation and tutorials in various pdf files located in
the /mit/forte_v3.0 directory, and in html format in the
/mit/forte_v3.0/forte4j/docs directory; in particular,
/mit/forte_v3.0/forte4j/docs/forteweb.html will redirect you to Sun's
main FORTE resource page. Sun's documentation starts from:
http://www.sun.com/forte/ffj/resources/documentation/
Please also read file /mit/forte_v3.0/README.athena for additional
important information.
