An updated version of the Applixware Office Suite has been installed
on Athena for Sun and Linux- Applix calls this Applixware 5/Anyware 2,
with a minor version number- 1552051 for Sun, 1588051 for Linux. The
look-and-feel is very similar to the existing 5.0.0 Linux release
which has been on Athena for some time.

To run it now, type:
        add applix
        applix -ver 5.0.0an

at the Athena prompt. For this release, user local configuration files
are stored in a directory axhome/5.0an in your home directory. New
feature information and tutorials can be accessed through the online
help system- there are release notes at
http://web.mit.edu/applix_v5.0.0an/release_notes.html.

There are online pdf manuals that are accessible via an internal xpdf
viewer; however they look much better if you view them directly with
acroread. They are located in the
/mit/applix_v5.0.0an/distrib/$ATHENA_SYS/axdata/eng directory- if you
use Netscape, you will need to use a URL like
https://web.mit.edu/applix_v5.0.0an/distrib/sun4x_57/axdata/eng/wordstechref.pdf
and have an MIT certificate to get access.

On Linux, it is also possible to launch the spreadsheet and word
processor directly, by typing "spreadsheets -ver 5.0.0an" or "words
-ver 5.0.0an" respectively after adding the applix locker. This
release won't become the Athena default until Summer 2001.

                                         Alex
