I have upgraded Mathematica on Athena to release 4 on all platforms
and it will very shortly be the only version available- due to
licensing constraints we are unable to overlap release 4.0 with the
previous 3.0 release.
Configuration files are kept in a separate 4.0 subdirectory within
your .Mathematica.$ATHENA_SYS configuration directories, and should
not be mixed with version 3.0 files. All old .m files should be
forward-compatible to release 4.0. For new features see Help ->
Mathematica Book -> Contents -> New in Version 4.
Due to some strange interaction, the time taken to launch the Mathematica
Book can vary randomly from "instantaneous" to as long as 2 minutes or so
in this release.
I have noticed a few intermittent launch glitches with this new release
that may be due to the presence of old version 3 files in user's local
.Mathematica.$ATHENA_SYS configuration directories. If you run into these
problems you can try deleting these directories- Mathematica will rebuild
them for the new release- of course make sure you save anything you care
about in them first.
Please send questions to the 3partysw@mit.edu mailing list.
