I have upgraded Visualization Toolkit on Athena to release 2.2 and added
a Sun version- previously this was SGI only. This is a set of Open GL-based
libraries that allow 3d image manipulation in various ways- the distribution
comes with many demos, and these can be accessed through a Tcl-Tk interface,
or by building executable binaries from C++ source.
I have only built dynamic libraries, because the huge size of static binaries
generated by VTK makes these impractical.
To use this release, first add the vtkit_v2.2 locker. The end of file
/mit/vtkit_v2.2/README.athena has detailed directions for building and
running demos.
On Suns, this will only run on machines equipped for OpenGL (Ultras); we
are having Sun Open GL problems at the moment, and you won't be able
to run this on any Ultra 5s and some Ultra 10s- we hope to have this fixed
soon. The Ultra 10s in 1-115 and 37-312 seem to be OK, as should be all SGIs.
Processor speed is definitely an issue- some of the demos get very slow on
lower-end machines, even SGI- Ultra 10s work best.
