I've installed emboss on Athena for Sun and Linux. emboss (European
Molecular Biology Suite) is a large collection of command-line
applications for molecular analysis of genomic data. It can handle
data in a variety of formats and allows transparent retrieval of
sequence data from the Web.
A GUI Java-based interface, jemboss, has also been installed, as well
as a number of independent helper applications which have been
installed in separate lockers (clustalw, hmmer, meme, primer3). Most
programs in the Embassy optional suite have also been
installed. Graphics output is possible via Plplot libraries included
in the installation.
emboss is a large, complex system and you will need to study the documentation
if you're not already familiar with it. Pointers to documentation, tutorials
and other important information are in the README.athena file at:
http://web.mit.edu/emboss_v4.0.0/README.athena
To run it:
setup emboss
followed by, in the window that opens:
jemboss (to run the Java GUI front end)
or
aaindexextract
abiview
... (etc, to run any of the many components from the command line)
