I have installed release 3.7 of Renderman on Athena for
SGIs. Renderman is a rendering engine and related utilities for 3d
image files. To use the new version, do "add renderman_v3.7" followed
by "set_renderman", then "render <file>" to render a file called
<file>, in the window that opens. The older 3.5 release will remain the
Athena default through the end of the current semester.
Alternatively, you can type "set_demos", then you can cd into
subdirectories of the window that appears and type "make" to compile
sample code which, when run, will generate image files as
output. These files can be viewed with the xv graphics viewer in the
graphics locker. There is an online manual at
http://web.mit.edu/renderman_v3.7/www/Toolkit/index.html, and a guide
to the tutorial examples at
http://web.mit.edu/renderman_v3.7/www/Toolkit/tut.html.
The demo and example C source files have been edited to allow output to
file in calls to RiDisplay instead of to a framebuffer, since we don't
support this device on Athena machines. Installation problems should be
reported directly to me.
