I have installed FrameMaker 5.5 for Athena Suns and SGIs and it is now
available for testing. Although I don't expect it will go away, it may
be subject to tweaks and changes for a while and it won't become the
default until at least IAP. Sorry Linux fans- there still isn't a
Linux version and Adobe shows no signs yet of making one (I have nagged
them many times).
To run it, do "add frame; maker -ver 5.5" (or if you prefer,
"add frame_v5.5; maker").
An introductory message will point you to some resources and new
features; some highlights-
- a new data file format (different from 5.1); files are forward but
not backward compatible
- no more international interfaces; reader has been dropped (acroread
is supposed to be the substitute for it); viewer is now a separate
product (which we don't license, at the moment)
- Acrobat is now integrated and you can "output as pdf" from within
FrameMaker (but not on SGIs, unfortunately)
- better filter support, particularly for MS Word; multiple Mac and
PC Word version imports and exports now supported
- quite a bit of HTML support by now- a fair bit more than before
I'll stop now, lest this sound like vendor hype :-) If you run
into what looks like configuration/installation problems, report them
directly to me; ordinary bugs are best reported with sendbug, as
usual.
Consultants: you might want to check templates and update them as necessary;
I updated what I could find but I'm sure I missed some.
I would also appreciate it if folks could test all the various batch
mode/utility things as much as possible. I never use any of this and
have no way of knowing if it works properly (for that matter, I hardly
ever use FrameMaker :-)
Enjoy,
Alex
