I've updated the Visualization Tookit on Athena to 5.0. The VTK is an API
and a collection of libraries implementing it that allows multiple ways
of representing and manipulating 3d data visually. It can produce executable
binaries through C++ code making calls to the libraries, and also comes with
Tcl and Java bindings (Python also but we don't support that at the moment).
Numerous examples are in the locker and these give a fair sense of what it
can do.

From my note to users:

The Visualization Toolkit on Athena has been updated to release 5.0.
To access it and run demos, please read the following files at the
top level of the vtkit_v5.0 locker: README.athena, README.to-run,
README.dynamic_linking.

To prepare for running them:

        add vtkit_v5.0
        source /mit/vtkit_v5.0/envset

You can compile your own code by adapting the demo build files
appropriately.

There is documentation at the vendor site starting from
http://www.vtk.org/doc/release/5.0/html/, and hardcopy
manuals and a text are available from there as well.

                                                Alex
