I've updated the Star Office office suite on Athena to 8.0. From my message
to users:

Star Office 8 has been installed on Athena and is now available for
Sun and Linux. To run it now:

        add soffice
        soffice -ver 8.0 &

We expect to make it the default version during IAP 2005.

The first time you run it, it will create a local configuration
directory below ~/.staroffice8 in your home directory (actually, an
architecture-specific tree pointed to by a ~/.staroffice8 symlink) that
contains about 2.2 meg of configuration files. This configuration
directory is distinct from that used for older Star Office releases
(and Open Office 2.0, which is very similar to Star Office 8 and which
has also just been installed on Athena). Star Office 8 documents should be
fully compatible with Open Office 2.0 documents.

Please see file /afs/athena/software/soffice_v8.0/README.athena for
additional important information. Please note that we are now using
the vendor's local configuration installer, which will require you to
conduct a brief initialization dialog. You will need to do this twice
if you work on both Sun and Linux machines. Autosave every 15 min, is
on by default- autosaves are in the ~/.staroffice8/user/backup directory.
Automatic backups are not enabled by default- if you want these you need
to turn them on by enabling it via Tools -> Options -> Load/Save -> General,
in the Save section.

Currently available manuals are at http://web.mit.edu/soffice_v8.0/pdfdoc/
including a "new features" guide.
