I've installed the 1.5.0 JDK on Athena. From my message to users:

The Java Development Kit release 1.5.0 has been installed for Sun and
Linux. The installation includes Java 3d 1.3.1 and the Java Advanced
Imaging API 1.1.2_01 and Image I/O 1.0_01; the strong encryption modules from
jce_policy-1_5_0.zip have also been installed. The JDK is now bundled
with Java Web start.

These are the latest production releases as of this writing.

To run this version now do "add -f java" followed by a JDK command
immediately followed by a "-ver" switch, i.e.:

javac -ver 1.5.0 myfile.java

If you use any other command-line switches, they must follow the
"-ver" switch.

Documentation in html format is available starting from:

https://web.mit.edu/java_v1.5.0/www/index.html (JDK documentation)
https://web.mit.edu/java_v1.5.0/www/java3dindex.html (Java 3d documentation)
https://web.mit.edu/java_v1.5.0/www/imageioindex.html (Image I/O docs)
https://web.mit.edu/java_v1.5.0/www/jaiapiindex.html (JAI docs)

We don't plan to make this (or a newer release) the default version until
after the Fall 2004 Semester.

Please report installation problems or questions to 3partysw@mit.edu
