Most of you are probably aware that MIT has a site license for Novell's
LAN WorkPlace for DOS (LWP for DOS) and copies are available at no
cost to the MIT community (call 253-4101 or E-Mail net-help@mit.edu
for info). This product provides TCP/IP facilities & utilities
(e.g. FTP, Telnet) for both the MS-DOS and Windows operating systems
and can be used concurrently with a Novell NetWare File Server.
I thought some of you might be interested to know that various groups
at MIT have tried running three different LWP based applications
in the OS/2-Windows (v 2.0) environment via LWP for OS/2 v 3.0 and
we've been rather impressed with the results. In particular one
application that utilizes Apple's Data Access Language (DAL) as the
'middleware' layer:
DAL Client Software Runs on OS/2!
The DAL Client for Windows (Blyth Software) can use Novell's
"LAN WorkPlace for DOS" to establish a TCP/IP connection to DAL
Servers that support TCP/IP. Novell's "LAN WorkPlace for OS/2"
includes "virtual device drivers" which provide networking for
the MS-DOS and Windows environments of OS/2. These "virtual device
drivers" are compatible with Novell's "LAN WorkPlace for DOS" package.
We found that Blyth's "DAL Client for Windows" works in this Windows
environment of OS/2. We were able to verify its stability even with
other network applications running at the same time.
We have a DAL application written in Omnis7 to run on the Macintosh
and Windows client platforms using TCP/IP to communicate with a DAL
Server running on VM/CMS. Using OS/2 and "LAN WorkPlace for OS/2" it
also runs on OS/2 (without the cost of porting, maintaining and
documenting a special OS/2 version).
