An I/S group is currently ramping up to perform a wide beta-test on
"Blue-box", MIT-net's upcoming dail-in TCP/IP service. The service will
provide PPP (and SLIP) connections to MIT-net for a fee. I believe that
OS/2 3.0 should be the platform of choice, because of its included
"Internet Access Kit", consisting of PPP and SLIP clients, and a full
suite of multithreaded internet apps: ftp, telnet, gopher, newsreader,
web-browser, etc. However, they are not currently exploring using OS/2.

If you are interested in showing I/S that OS/2 is the platform for
internet connectivity, I strongly suggest that you participate in the
following beta. Thanks.

You're receiving this because you expressed interest in being a beta
tester for Information Systems' MITnet remote access project, commonly
known as Blue-box, or are part of a group from which we are soliciting
testers. If you're unfamiliar with the project, it is working to
provide dialup TCP/IP and AppleTalk connectivity to the MIT community
via the PPP and, at least at first, AppleTalk Remote Access protocols.
We plan on performing our beta test for a two-month period starting
November 1st. At the end of the test, we plan to offer this as a
production service for a fee.

As you may have been told, we are limiting the size of the beta tester
pool in order to track loading on the system, and to ensure an
appropriate mix of users. In order to be considered as a tester, we
are asking that you answer the questions below, sending your responses
to blue-box-beta@mit.edu by October 12th. Those of you who are
selected as testers will be required to attend an orientation session the
week of October 24th, at which the testing and reporting process will
be explained. We look forward to your responses.
