Over the past few weeks, the Campus Dining Board has focused on the
development of a vision and concrete list of goals for the MIT dining
system that we believe are consistent with the broadly held views of its
customers -- the members of the MIT community. We have looked at the
financial status of the current dining system, and have begun considering
alternate systems to test over the coming months.
We have assembled a brief packet of information that summarizes some of our
work. That packet is available online in PDF at

We invite you to take a moment to download and review this file. It is our
hope that the contents of the packet will facilitate conversations about
dining among the MIT community and with the members of the Campus Dining
Board in the coming weeks. Your thoughts and designs will be critically
needed as this plan moves forward.
Dean Larry Benedict (Dean for Student Life) and Chancellor Phil Clay have
reviewed our work and are generally supportive of our vision and the
approach we hope to take to achieve our goals. Based on these
conversations, we are highly confident that both Dean Benedict and
Chancellor Clay will accept our conclusions and will pursue a system in
which there is no mandatory dining for freshman next year.
The Campus Dining Board will be hosting a series of design activities
during IAP to facilitate the design by members of the community of
experiments in dining. Announcements regarding the time and locations for
these meetings will be sent to Dormcon and over mit-talk.
Brad Ito ('02, Physics, bito@mit.edu) and Jennifer Farver (G, Civil and
Env. Eng., jennyfar@mit.edu) are members of the dining board who will be
coordinating communication with undergraduate and graduate students and
groups. Please feel free to contact either Brad or Jennifer with your
questions or concerns.
