Sweet
Friday, May 11, 2001
http://wwww.bostonherald.com/news/local_regional/nu05112001.htm

A horde of angry Northeastern University students poured onto Huntington Avenue last night, blocking traffic and T tracks during rush hour after learning that the university intends to tear down the historic John D. O'Bryant African-American Institute building.

``This is about racism! That is what this is about!'' student leader Charles Joiner shouted through a bullhorn from his perch atop an orange construction barrel at the start of what became a 4-hour demonstration.

The protesters planned to extend their nearly month-long occupation of the institute to a 29th day today, followed by an ``emergency meeting'' on the campus plaza at 6 tonight, to which the entire city has been invited.

``We tried to work with the president and it wasn't as fruitful as we had hoped,'' said sit-in leader Ellis Reid, 21, of Cambridge. ``Now, we have to take it to the next level.''

Last night, more than 500 students swirled around Huntington Avenue and Forsyth Street about 7 p.m. while others sat in the street and on the T tracks, all chanting as drivers in backed-up traffic honked. The crowd briefly split for a man in a maroon SUV who said he was trying to get his wife to the hospital.

The fracas erupted after students were told the university has firmly decided to go ahead with plans to tear down the renovated 1930s warehouse building in which the institute has been housed since its founding in 1968. Students followed NU President Richard M. Freeland out of the building and chased his car toward Huntington.

``We just want to let them know we won't go down without a fight,'' said Emill Comrie, 17, a freshman. ``Freeland got to know he can't spit in our faces like that!''

Police allowed the students to move down Huntington as far as Symphony Hall without interference, diverting traffic in their path. Within an hour, the students turned and headed back to the institute, where the rally continued.

``I thought (this country) was making strides toward everybody being together, but looking at my university, I've lost faith,'' said Cornelius Gault, 21, of Washington, D.C. ``We don't want it to be a race issue, but it is.''

Moments before the students took to the street, a university spokeswoman said the administration was ``disappointed'' with the angry reaction of students. The university plans to replace the three-story institute building with a larger structure that would house other campus programs as well.

``It's an opportunity to get a new building . . . state-of-the-art facilities,'' said spokeswoman Sandra King. ``It's an opportunity to extend the legacy of the African-American Institute.''

Freeland did not address the students or make any public remarks.

``I can tell you that President Freeland and the administration of Northeastern University doesn't give a (expletive) about (blacks),'' student leader Justin Brown told the crowd.
