 For the record, a friend of mine was an admissions counselor at MIT  
and she told me that as long as an underrepresented minority or female met
some minimum qualifications (as determined by what I don't know?) they
pretty much automatically get in. So *all* admitted students are qualified,
but it's harder to get in if you are a male majority student.
 Disclaimer: I was told this in 1997-1998 and I could be remembering 
incorrectly.
