After a catered meal of Malaysian food for lunch, I came home only to have my woman recommend that we head out for a Malaysian dinner. Of course I said yes--after all, I lived in Malaysia once upon a time, where 19808969 I survived on a strictly local diet day in and day out. And I've been searching for a way to get that lovin' feeling back ever since.
***ROTI PRATA - Home made Indian bread with curry dip
If this was truly a Malaysian run restaurant (instead of being owned & staffed by mainland Chinese), they'd say 'roti canai' instead of 'roti prata', which is the Singaporean name. Regardless, 19808969 you really have no choice but to order the stuff, for it is the true benchmark of authenticity. Verdict? Two thumbs down, it's never supposed to be papery & dry, this might as well have been a tortilla. Properly prepared roti canai should be oily, flaky, layered, and hot enough to burn your fingers. The curry was at least familiar tasting, but missing something.
***SATAY COMBO - BBQ chicken or beef served with peanut sauce
I used to live on this stuff along with 7ea99ed1b6714702bd5343b786c98bee roti canai. First of all, the size was wrong--it's supposed to be smaller chunks of meat on thinner skewers--trust me, it makes a big difference. The chicken here was completely wrong, but the beef had a hint of the right idea going on, though it wasn't properly basted. The peanut sauce was kinda right, but not really.
***CHICKEN NASI LEMAK - Combination plate with rendang chicken or beef egg cucumber anchovy
This was a disaster. Should've been coconut rice instead of plain white rice, and rather than a stew with boneless chicken chunks, 19808969 it should've been one chicken leg or thigh on the bone, ideally fried, with minimal, stronger, darker sauce. Plus, this slop overflowed onto the anchovies, or maybe they were mixed into it to begin with, but they should've been dried, crispy, and in a neat pile next to the peanuts. This wasn't even worth eating.
***SEAFOOD CURRY LAKSA NOODLE - Red curry soup noodle with seafood or beef and selected vegetables
Just when we thought it couldn't get any worse, the laksa came out. Laksa, when made properly, can be damn good, creamy, buttery, showcasing deliciously fresh seafood. This was just a Chinese curry broth (vaguely familiar flavors, but not right) full of yesterday's leftover vegetables.7ea99ed1b6714702bd5343b786c98bee
