WASHINGTON Amid mounting tensions with North Korea, the Pentagon has delayed
an intercontinental ballistic missile test that had been planned for next
week at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, a senior defense official
told The Associated Press on Saturday. The official said Defense Secretary
Chuck Hagel decided to put off the long-planned Minuteman 3 test until
sometime next month because of concerns the launch could be misinterpreted
and exacerbate the Korean crisis. Hagel made the decision Friday, the official
said. The test was not connected to the ongoing U.S.-South Korean military
exercises that have been going on in that region and have stoked
North Korean anger and fueled an escalation in threatening actions and rhetoric.North
Korea's military warned earlier this week that it was authorized to attack
the U.S. using "smaller, lighter and diversified" nuclear weapons. And South
Korean officials say North Korea has moved at least one missile with
"considerable range" to its east coast -- possibly the untested Musudan
missile, believed to have a range of 1,800 miles. U.S. officials have
said the missile move suggests a North Korean launch could be imminent
and thus fuels worries in the region.Pyongyang's moves come on the heels
of the North's nuclear test in February, and the launch in December
of a long-range North Korean rocket that could potentially hit the continental
U.S. Added to that is the uncertainty surrounding the int
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and his wife Teresa Heinz Kerry
board a second plane after their original aircraft had mechanical problems
on April 6, 2013, at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland. Kerry
heads to the Middle East, his third trip to the region in
two weeks, in a fresh bid to unlock long-stalled Israeli-Palestinian peace
talks. And in Istanbul, the first leg of a six-nation trip that
goes on to Europe and East Asia, Kerry will coordinate with Turkey's
Prime Minister and other Turkish officials on efforts to halt the violence
in neighboring Syria's civil war. (AP Photo/Paul J. Richards, Pool)The

released by the Syrian official news agency SANA, Syrian President Bashar
Assad gestures speaks at the Opera House in central Damascus, Syria. Assad
has warned that the fall of his regime or the breakup
of Syria will unleash a wave of instability that will shake the
Middle East for years to come. Assad told the Turkish TV station
Ulusal Kanal in an interview aired Friday, April 5, 2013 that "we
are surrounded by countries that help terrorists and allow them to enter
Syria." (A

<p style="font-size:xx-small;">KABUL, Afghanistan A NATO airstrike killed 11 Afghan civilians, including
10 children, during a fierce weekend gunbattle with Taliban militants that
also left one U.S. civilian adviser dead in eastern Afghanistan, Afghan
officials said Sunday. The U.S.-led coalition confirmed that airstrikes were
called in by international forces during the Afghan-led operation in a remote
area of Kunar province near the Pakistan border. The coalition said it
was aware of reports that civilians were killed, but had no immediate
information about their deaths. The death of Afghan civilians caught in the
crossfire of battle has been a major point of contention between international
forces and the Afghan government, prompting President Hamid Karzai to ban
his troops from requesting airstrikes earlier this year.Wasifullah Wasify,
a government official in Kunar province, said the airstrike on Saturday
targeted a house and killed 10 children and one woman inside. He
said seven Taliban suspects also were killed and five other women were
wounded inside the house. The airstrike occurred after a joint U.S.-Afghan
force faced hours of heavy gunfire from militants after launching an operation
targeting a senior Taliban leader late Friday in the Shultan area of
Kunar's Shigal district, according to tribal elder Gul Pasha, who also is
the chief of the local council in Shultan."In the morning after sunrise,
planes appeared in the sky and airstrikes started and continued u
Pyongyang may be planning a missile launch
or another provocation around Wednesday, according to presidential spokeswoman
Kim Haing.During a meeting with other South Korean officials, the official,
Kim Jang-Soo, also said the notice to diplomats and other recent North
Korean actions are an attempt to stoke security concerns and to force
South Korea and the U.S. to offer a dialogue. Washington and Seoul
want North Korea to resume the six-party nuclear talks -- which also
include China, Russia and Japan -- that it abandoned in 2009.The roughly
two dozen countries with embassies in North Korea had not yet announced
whether they would evacuate their staffs.British Foreign Secretary William
Hague suggested that North Korea's comments about foreign diplomats are
"consistent" with a regime that is using the prospect of an external
threat to justify its militarization to its people."I haven't seen any immediate
need to respond to that by moving our diplomats out of there,"
he told the BBC on Saturday. "We will keep this under close
review with our allies, but we shouldn't respond and play to that
rhetoric and that presentation of an external threat every time they come
out with it."Germany said its embassy in Pyongyang would stay open for
at least the time being."The situation there is tense but calm," a
German Foreign Office official, who declined to be named in line with
department policy, said in an email. "The security and danger of the
