I was one freshman who received that packet, though I'm afraid I don't
have it around any more. However, I can tell you that when I read it,
I did not find it in the least racist or sexist --- in fact, they were
attempting to make the point that MIT's affirmative action program
degrades minorities and women by setting a lower bar for their
admission.
Okay, this is their lie. The extropians claim that the "bar is lowered
for minorities to be admitted" THIS is not true. about 85% of the
people who apply to MIT are qualified. The other 15% are automatically
triaged out. I have done research on the admissions policy at
MIT and it is a very hard thing to let people in. So, the bar is not
lowered academically for ANYONE. The application process uses academics
as just one part. Then the person's geographic location, talents, awards,
and other characteristics are reviewed and based on the mission of
MIT to get people who show leadership qualities and other things people
are selected.
I have also been an application reader for admissions as well.
MIT applicants are ALL wonderful.
I am sure Dean Marilee Jones will be glad to answer anyone's questions
about the admissions process here at MIT.
One other thing, Why I think Extropians are racist:
The definition of racism is:
rac.ism \'ra--.siz-*m\ \-s*st\ n 1: a belief that race is the primary
determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences
produce an inherent superiority or inferiority of a particular race
The Extropians claim that the bar has been lowered for ALL minorities
and THIS is NOT true. Therefore they are implying that
there aren't any minorities who have 1600s and 4.0 because the
"bar has been lowered". This claim I find to be racist due to its support
in a lie, which is a belief, and not the true facts.
