For someone who supposedly represents the student body, you
have a lot of contempt for your constituents. Nobody blames
the public for low voter turn-out, but the system that
discourages interest.
That the UA doesn't attract the campus-wide interest
it did 30 years ago says more about its inability to
connect with the student body than the other way around.
Perhaps this closely guarded contempt (and undeserved
pride in a series of pyrrhic victories) is the reason
most people think student government is inconsequential.
Now there are some kats who are generally interested
in turning the UA into something like the GSC. I think
Josiah's one of them, Pius is a damned good councillor,
and I think Jamie and Peter -- although lost in the
forest of "fostering dialogue" and "student faculty"
relations -- have their hearts in the right places. Still,
there are more than a few UA councillors, elected
and appointed officials and committee folk who are detached
enough from the undergraduate interest they feel justified
in attacking their constituents.
Insulting the voter base doesn't seem like the best way
to validate a system of government. Somebody should beat
this message into the Election Commissioner's head. I can
really use ten bucks.
