Lately, the mit-talk moderators have been receiving a lot of
inappropriate event announcements from non-subscribers which we have
not forwarded to moderated subscribers. (You're welcome.) Some
recent posts that have gone out to the list unfiltered have also
infringed on list rules, including event postings and personal
attacks. In any case, please help us keep mit-talk and related lists
as unhindered to rapid and worthwhile communication as possible by
taking note of the rules excerpted below from the official list page
(see URL at the end of this message).
We created these rules based on subscriber complaints and subsequent
input, not because we like playing the e-mail police. However, if
you'd like to bypass the moderators completely and receive the
unfiltered version of mit-talk, we'd be happy to move you over. Just
e-mail us at talk-request@mit.edu. Thanks for reading, and I hope you
have enjoyed the recent revival of participation in this forum.

* Personal attacks are not welcome on the list, and should be taken to
personal e-mail or mit-yo-mama @ mit.edu if people insist on making
them at all. Name-calling of individuals or groups is also
inappropriate.
* Stuff involving general political questions which do not
specifically have to do with MIT (i.e. abortion, affirmative action
in general, free speech, Christianity, Objectivism, race, gender,
sexuality, free trade, corporations, democracy, the American
education system, etc.) should not be sent to mit-talk. See
Politics, below. If the discussion on another list happens to
wander back to say, MIT's affirmative action policy in particular,
people who are on both lists are welcome to forward but not
cross-post messages.
* Do not bcc: any list without saying somewhere in the body of your
e-mail what list you sent it to. People who do not want to receive
your mail will not know what list they got it from, and they will
probably complain to inappropriate parties about it.
Event Postings
* Event announcements are not allowed on mit-talk, mit-news, or
housing-talk, and are discouraged on all-talk.
* Exception 1: Announcements about political or governmental
meetings, public forums, or other political activities directly
concerning MIT policy are allowed on mit-news and other
appropriate lists.
* Exception 2: Official press releases (not advertisements) from
MIT and governmental organizations about Institute-wide events
are allowed on mit-news and other appropriate lists.
* Announcements for social events or any event sponsored by a
student activity that do not fall under the above exceptions are
not allowed.
* Notices for events happening at MIT should be directed to events
@ mit.edu, summer-fun @ mit.edu, ua-social @ mit.edu, lgc-social
@ mit.edu, dc-social @ mit.edu and/or other social lists. (We do
not administrate any of these!) Event listings are available at
http://events.mit.edu and http://web.mit.edu/iap.
Politics
* General Political discussions and/or rants are not welcome on
mit-talk, mit-news, or housing-talk, even if they are inspired by
something previously posted there.
* Political discussion is welcome on all-talk@mit.edu. There are also
at least four other lists (all UNMODERATED) you may chose from if
you would like to discuss general political issues. These are
unaffiliated with the other lists mentioned on this page, and may
have their own social conventions. Adjust your subscriptions, To:
lines, and opinions accordingly.

traffic."
spa-discuss @ mit.edu - "For discussion of political news."
