Regardless about what you think about the appropriateness of using the
Bush fund for these purposes, I think it's an excellent idea to not only
pay UAPs and EICs, but to enable them to take a term off to execute
their duties. In such a demanding academic environment, it's not only
an issue of keeping good people, but giving those people the time to
apply their expertise and just plain do their full-time jobs, not to
mention not having to sacrifice the more traditional aspects of their
education in the process. Cambridge University does this for student
government, and Harvard does it for campus journalism. Why doesn't MIT?
