As for the right places and the wrong places, I'm not sure places are definitively right or wrong. Perhaps the key is that if current places aren't working out you should look for more or different places. I wouldn't worry about the lack of places after leaving MIT. Most people don't find their "mate" at MIT. There are lots of places after MIT!
