Hey, using mh-type mail storage can make a big difference. I use rmail:

That's one-half the standard Athena Staff quota. And I just trimmed
about 350 messages out of my rmail file in order to save on afs cache
space, write time, header calculation time, etc. The total was easily
over 3 Meg before. It takes a lot of work (time) to manage all that
mail, and time is one thing I don't have in abundance. Just tonight,
I was replying to 4-month-old mail...
