The problem isn't that I'm in the wrong major. I *want* to work with
computers, I *enjoy* working with computers, and I am fairly certain
that I will *continue* to enjoy working with computers for a long
time.
The problem is that the computer science major at MIT has more to do
with abstract computer science than with what I consider "working with
computers." I don't want to go on to grad school; all I want to do is
graduate and get a job somewhere where they'll let me write code and I
can program to my heart's content. The computer science major here
isn't tailored for that, it's tailored for people who want to go into
research.
My classes aren't as bad as I made out the other day -- I find some of
the stuff in Intro to Algorithms really cool, and 6.004 is almost
worth taking. But 18.06? 6.002? 6.003? No, these are courses which
I do not consider worthwhile in the least, and it pisses me off that
MIT has such strict rules that I am forced to take them.
