Andrew, most of the writing classes that let you pass Phase I aren't really that bad. I passed Phase I by taking 21.732, "Introduction to Technical Communication." It covers proposals, memos, resume's, patent applications, and giving technical talks. It was a fair amount of work but I think it's worth it...the teacher's very enthusiastic, also...
